The famous Bad Ems mines have been exploited since Roman times, mainly for lead, silver, zinc and mercury.
The “Neuhoffnungsstollen” mine, opened in 1858, was the most important mine in Bad Ems. There were 15 levels and the shaft was almost 900 metres deep.
