Description

Very nice fluorite from the Avellan mine in the Var department. The cube-shaped crystals of this fluorite are next to small translucent tabular crystals of baryte. Note the particular brilliance of the fluorite crystals, as well as the presence of scarring of the gangue on the back.

This mine was mainly exploited in the 1960s/70s, and 40,000 tons of fluorspar were produced.

The Avellan mine is located in the Var, in the crystalline Provence, in the commune of Adrets-de-l’Estérel.
