Description

Large variolite pebble found on the beach at Agde in the Hérault department.

The discovery of this pebble in this location bears witness to the sedimentary dynamics of watercourses. As variolite is only found in the alluvium of the upper Durance (which rises in the Hautes-Alpes), we can see that the pebble travelled down the Durance, then the Rhône, before being deposited with numerous other pebbles in the Camargue delta. Finally, it can be found on the coast, as a result of coastal erosion or marine currents.
